Description
Theme 2016: Personal and Team Development
Presentations will be loosely structured and highly interactive. Each will include a suggested advance reading, and a facilitated discussion that addresses the specific interests and concerns of group members. The series focuses on the most critical challenges faced by all organizational leaders—beginning with their own formation, and building upon that framework to address both personal and organizational values, and relationships with board and staff.
The “Value” Proposition: Your Way of Doing
“Values” are every organization’s “hidden treasure”—hidden because they often get lost behind your mission and vision, and treasure because, when taken seriously, they are your most precious asset (and certainly one of the few variables you CAN control). What personal values do you bring to your role? How do your values help shape the values of your organization? How should employees/board members/others be engaged in the process of value determination? Once you’ve identified your values, how do you keep them front and cetner? Participants are encouraged to bring their organizational value statements with them for an exploration of how values can be effectively formed, implemented, and reinforced.
This session is facilitated by Tom Soma
A 1979 graduate of Notre Dame and long-time resident of Portland, Oregon, Tom served as Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Oregon and Southwest Washington (RMHC®) for 15 years. During his tenure, RMHC was recognized as one of Oregon’s “Top 100 Non-Profits to Work For” (2009-13) and one of the state’s “Top 100 Green Businesses” (2010-12). In 2013, RMHC was a finalist for Oregon’s “Ethics in Business Award.” With four colleagues, he created and continues to participate in a mentoring program for the next generation of non-profit leaders.
In recent years, Tom has published articles on leadership development, planned giving, and corporate—non-profit partnerships. In December of 2012, he authored his first book (No Small Thing—and Other Periodic Musings), a collection of essays paired with the stunning portraits of award-winning photographer, Bob Ray. His second book (The Secret Ingredient—More Musings from the Ronald McDonald Houses) was published in 2014.
This is the second of four in a series. You are welcome to attend single sessions!
