TOPIC: Clark County Council Chair Race Candidate Forum

Description: The October Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be a countywide stage for the Clark County Council Chair race. The League of Women Voters, the former Chair of the Freeholders, and the Battle Ground and the Greater Vancouver Chambers will gather with CVTV for this forum. The goal is to gain insight on the importance of this role, that is unique to other Clark County Commissioner races and hear directly from both candidates in an education-focused setting. The forum will be moderated by the League of Women Voters and Nan Henriksen will set the stage, sharing information as to why the freeholders (designers of the charter) chose to create a Chair seat.
Meet the Candidates
Eileen Quiring, a real estate broker in Washington, was elected to the Clark County Council in November, 2016. Prior to being sworn in as a member of the Board of County Councilors in January, 2017, she served on the Clark County Planning Commission and the Board of Equalization. Eileen attended elementary and high school in Battle Ground, Washington. She earned a B.A. in Management of Human Resources from George Fox University. The university named her as Distinguished Alumnus of the year in 1998. Eileen was elected (as Eileen Qutub) to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1995 and to the Oregon State Senate in 1997, where she served until January, 2001. She represented the Beaverton/Tigard area in Washington County. While in the Oregon legislature, Eileen was deeply involved in appropriations and justice issues in both houses, serving on Ways and Means committees, as well as committees with oversight of criminal and civil law. In the Senate, she chaired the Joint Ways and Means Subcommittees on Human Resources and on General Government, and served as Deputy Co-Chair of the Joint Ways and Means Committee in 1999. She was also a member of the Judiciary Committee, the Public Affairs Committee, and the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Transportation and Economic Development. During the interim (1999-2001), Eileen served as Chair of the Senate Revenue Committee, a member of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, the Education Leadership Team, the State Financial Aid Commission, and the Pacific Northwest Economic Region Compact. In the course of her public service, her peers consistently recognized her as an outstanding leader, electing her as Majority Whip for the 1999 legislative session. In 1999, she was recognized for outstanding achievement and service to state government, selected as a Toll Fellow by the Council of State Governments, one of 40 individuals from all three branches of state government in the nation to be so honored. Eric K. Holt and his family have lived in Clark County for 8 years as residents of Hockinson, WA. He and his wife, Lindsay, are raising their 3 boys on a 5-acre farm and investing their time and energy in the community. Currently a Safety and Operations Manager in the mining industry, Eric has experience managing teams and advocating for his employees and their safety. Melanie Davis has been a League of Women Voters Clark County Member for the last year and a half but a resident for almost 4 years. Melanie was born and grew up all over the Northwest in Washington, Oregon and Idaho and has lived in small and large communities, rural and urban and that experience has given her a unique understanding of issues that face her fellow citizens. She is a wife, mother and community member that values civic duties and education as essential for being an engaged citizen, from serving jury duty to voting or moderating a League of Women Voters Candidate Forum she sees it all as ways to help our constitutional democratic republic. Melanie see the value of encouraging others to be informed about the policies (and people who who shape policy) that changes our way of life in every community and remains active in her community. You might see her before an election day holding a sign reminding people to vote, she usually holds a sign that just says "VOTE" and not for who because she feels it is up to each citizen to come to an informed decision.
