Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, author, activist and educator, will speak at Washington State University Vancouver's 2011 Marquee Diversity Event. "An Evening of Poetry, Love and Enlightenment" will take place 7pm March 9 in the Firstenburg Student Commons. The event is free and open to the public.
One of the most widely read American poets, Giovanni insists on presenting the truth as she sees it. A prominent voice of the black community for the past 30 years, she is committed to the fight for civil rights and equality. Giovanni emphasizes the power individuals have to better themselves and ultimately the lives of others.
The recipient of over 25 honorary degrees, Giovanni has been named Woman of the Year by Mademoiselle Magazine, Ladies Home Journal and Ebony Magazine. Giovanni received Governor's Awards from both Tennessee and Virginia, is the first recipient of the Rosa L. Parks Woman of Courage Award and was granted the Langston Hughes Medal for poetry. She has received the keys to more than two-dozen cities and has been named one of Oprah Winfrey's twenty-five living legends.
Each year the Marquee Diversity Events bring nationally recognized speakers and performers to WSU Vancouver. The events serve to raise awareness of diversity, social justice and multiculturalism issues. Speakers and performers are chosen by a committee of students, staff and faculty. Marquee Diversity Events are funded by the Student Activities and Fees Committee and coordinated by the Student Diversity Office.
