We’re a nonprofit organization founded in response to the question, “How can we work to improve opportunities for our community’s children?”. This question is at the heart of the work that we do. We believe that the answer to this question is through building environments where children can learn and develop themselves through play. By playing, our children learn about the world and how they relate to it, giving them the foundation needed to thrive. 

How do we do this? We work in partnership with the Educational Service District (ESD) 112 to staff and facilitate numerous childcare centers in the southwest Washington area. Our programs are designed to support children at ages ranging from birth, to preschool, to school age. We have program types to support children of all backgrounds and needs.

General Description of Position:

Under the supervision of the Center Director, the EHS Lead Teacher is responsible for providing a safe and supervised educational setting for children whose age range from birth up-to-three years in the Early Head Start Program (EHS). Teachers work within the framework of age-appropriate curriculum and lesson plans, to promote the health, nutrition and education of Early Head Start children in their care. Teachers encourage parental involvement in educational planning, goal setting, and center activities. Responsibilities include supervising and delegating responsibilities to classroom staff, providing direct services and engaging with children in the classroom, as well as regular collaborative planning and follow-up, using program databases and tools. 

 

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Must meet one of the following:
    • The equivalent of 20 college quarter credits in early childhood education
    • Short or higher Washington State Early Childhood Education Certificate

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Plan developmentally appropriate child centered curriculum. 
  • Plan the program to meet the needs of the individual child with concerns for their interests, disabilities, special talents, cultural background and individual styles. 
  • Develop and follow class schedule which includes staff responsibilities. 
  • Plan and set up the environment of the room with well-defined interest areas. Set up toys and materials so that they are accessible to children. 
  • Post and implement appropriate guidance techniques and current lesson plans in the classroom. 
  • Supervise, interact, and play with children during assigned times of responsibilities. 
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, clean and healthy room environment, including administering first aid and handling emergencies. 
  • Assist with toileting, diapering, and hygiene needs of children. 
  • Establish and maintain positive communication and confidentiality using collaborative methods to problem solve and interact with families, children, and staff. 
  • Maintain all center records in an accurate and timely manner and in accordance with policy and procedures. 
  • Provide direction to child care assistants, temporary staff, and volunteers. 
  • Complete child assessments as required throughout the program year. 
  • Support and follow the direction of the center supervisor. 
  • Follow USDA guidelines (including meal counts and service procedures) 
  • Participate regularly in staff meetings, in-service programs, and workshops. This may require the ability to work occasional nights and weekends. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Physical/Strength Requirements: 

  • Regular attendance during scheduled work hours. 
  • Must present a professional and positive demeanor in behavior and dress.
  • Travel throughout SW Washington as assigned. 
  • Requires the ability to move or traverse about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, center activities, etc.
  • Moderate or frequent exposure to loud noises, outside weather elements, and temperature changes.
  • Lifting requirements include the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects including, the human body.
  • Job involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and/or pulling. Position involves physical mobility with or without reasonable accommodation to perform essential functions of the job.

 

Employment Requirements: 

  • Successful completion of a portable background check (PBC) and clearance through the Department of Children Youth and Families prior to starting employment, paid by SELF.  
  • Valid certification in Child/Adult CPR, first-aid, HIV/Blood Borne Pathogens training and current food handler’s card, paid by employee.  
  • Valid negative TB test completed within the previous twelve months along with an initial health exam completed by medical provider showing you are free from communicable diseases. 
  • Provide documentation showing immunity to the MMR. 
  • Provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or have an approved medical/religious exception on file. 
  • Participation in the State Training and Registry System (STARS) program required; Child Care Basics training required prior to employment.
