We’re a nonprofit organization founded in response to the question, “How can we work to improve opportunities for our community’s children?”. This question is at the heart of the work that we do. We believe that the answer to this question is through building environments where children can learn and develop themselves through play. By playing, our children learn about the world and how they relate to it, giving them the foundation needed to thrive. 

How do we do this? We work in partnership with the Educational Service District (ESD) 112 to staff and facilitate numerous childcare centers in the southwest Washington area. Our programs are designed to support children at ages ranging from birth, to preschool, to school age. We have program types to support children of all backgrounds and needs.

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • 18 years of age or older 
  • Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education preferred.
  • 12 hours of 100-level college credits required (any subject). Must have 45 college credits within 5 years of service.


Employment Requirements: 

  • Successful completion of a portable background check (PBC) and clearance through the Department of Children Youth and Families prior to working in program. 
  • Participation in Washington’s State Training and Registry System (STARS) program required. 
  • Valid CPR certification including child/infant prior to working in program. 
  • Valid Food Handler’s Card required prior to working in program. 
  • Negative TB test completed within the previous twelve months prior to working in program. 
  • Initial health exam completed by medical provider showing you are free from communicable diseases. 
  • Documentation showing immunity to Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR), either vaccination records or results of a Titer test prior to working in program. 
  • Completion of HIV/Blood Borne Pathogens training prior to working in program. 
  • Provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or have an approved medical/religious exception on file. 


General Description of Position:  

The Center Director is responsible for the overall operations, positive culture, and success of a Child Care Center. You will create and maintain an environment that is developmentally appropriate for children and utilizes the most effective methods to engage children and families. Through the establishment of a trusting and respectful collaboration, Center Directors will support teachers in their own professional development, through a process of observation, coaching, training, modeling, communication, goal setting, and plans for implementation as they build on their existing knowledge and develop new skills in supporting quality early childhood practice. The Center Director works in partnership with the ESD 112 to ensure compliance with the Washington Administrative Code and state licensing and that programmatic needs are being met.


Necessary Skills Required: 

  • Reasoning: Apply principles of logical and/or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 
  • Reading: Read manuals, policies, instructions, forms, book, and other documents in the English language.  
  • Writing: Write professional letters, emails, manuals, reports and other documents in the English language. 
  • Speaking: Conversant in the English language.  
  • Technology: Keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, database, electronic presentation, web navigation, email management, Microsoft Office, Outlook calendar, scanner, printer, and computer security.  
  • Professionalism: Positive attitude, flexibility, punctual, prepared, demonstrates a sense of humor, adaptability, and engaged in meetings and decisions.  
  • Flexibility: Able to work anytime during Center operating hours (typically 6a-6p) if staffing or program needs require it; open to working with other Centers to help support teamwork. 


Essential Functions: 

  • Instructional Leadership 
    • Implements and maintains a nurturing, safe, developmentally appropriate center environment consistent with the philosophy and values of ESD 112, SELF, and/or DCYF. 
    • Coaches, trains, and provides ongoing reflective supervision for all staff.  
    • Oversees the continuous quality improvement cycle by supporting individual professional development based on staff needs and interests.  
    • Acts as the instructional leader by overseeing the implementation of the teaching and learning cycle including developmentally appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, classrooms, teaching practices, and assessment.  
    • Maintains ongoing and regular professional communication with families and community members. 
    • Participates in SELF, ESD 112, and community meetings and special events as necessary.  
    • Plan and facilitate regularly center staff meetings and family engagements events.  
    • Adheres to and enforces all policies and procedures established by the ESD 112 and SELF. 
    • Promotes and represents the mission of ESD 112 and SELF to the community for the purpose of good will and community relations.  
    • Ensures the center health and safety practices as identified in policies and procedures (i.e.: universal precautions, safety checks, active supervision, individual care plans, health plans, etc.) are followed. 
    • Facilitate new family tours and orientations and respond to questions regarding care at the Center. 
    • Work alongside ESD 112 leadership to address compliance agreements and licensing, etc. 
  • Supervisory Requirements 
    • Supervise and lead a staff of 1-5 people (depending on size and structure of Center), focusing on the development and skillset of each individual employee.  
    • In collaboration with the Operations Center Director, provide professional guidance on challenging situations that arise with staff, children, or families. 
    • Uphold high level of confidentiality and professional relationships with those you serve and those who report to you. 
    • Interview and make hiring decisions of potential new staff, taking into consideration the needs of your center and the capacity of ongoing training needs. 
    • Provide new staff orientation and training to new hires and establish plans of development to ensure their strengths are highlighted and opportunities elevated; provide ongoing training of staff, including tracking and guidance on professional development plans. 
    • Write and deliver annual evaluations to all members of your team. 
  • Center Operations 
    • Prepare and deliver staff schedules utilizing online tools that accommodate the needs of the program. Respond appropriately and effectively to staffing challenges, such as call outs, terminations, open positions, etc.  
    • Follow up on employment requirements with SELF, such as utilizing SELF emails, timekeeping systems, and Outlook Calendars as needed. 
    • Stay up-to-date with data bases applicable to your center (ie: MERIT, Procare, Shifts, ChildPlus, etc.) and ensure all information for you and the staff is entered accurately and timely. 
    • Maintains all records as required for funding such as: CACFP meal counts, Procare time and attendance tracking, etc. 
    • Keep staff and child files up to date and current with mandatory requirements. For staff, ensure mandatory employment requirements are current and renewed as necessary (I.e: 1st Aid, CPR, Portable Background Check, Food Handlers, etc.) 
    • Work closely with local licensing to ensure standards and compliance are met; work quickly to resolve any issues.  
    • Monitors and reviews monthly budget reports as needed. Ensures spending is in accordance with financial guidelines and based on child interests and curriculum. 
    • Order supplies for the center according to program needs and within allotted budget. 
    • Responsible for the safe and orderly conditions of the building and grounds. 
    • Partner and collaborate with other Center Directors to support the staffing and program needs of other centers.  
    • Attending trainings as necessary and to further your own professional development in the field. 
    • Participate regularly in staff meetings, in-service programs, and workshops. This may require you to work occasional nights and weekends. 


Other Functions: 

  • Travel throughout SW Washington as needed to support other Centers. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings as needed.  
  • Knowledge of DCYF licensing regulations is a plus. 
  • 10 hours of continuing education required annually per child care licensing requirements.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 


Physical and Strength Demands:  

  • Requires the ability to move or traverse about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, center activities, etc.  
  • Moderate or frequent exposure to loud noises, outside weather elements, and temperature changes.  
  • Lifting requirements include the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects including, the human body. 
  • Job involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and/or pulling. Position involves physical mobility with or without reasonable accommodation to perform essential functions of the job.
